"In Rainbow Roads" re-imagines Radiohead's masterpiece as the Mario 64 soundtrack. And I'm living for it.

I'm not sorry about it: I'm a huge Radiohead fan. Despite the stereotype of "pretentious" Radiohead fans, I am willing to stand tall, proud and with enthusiasm as I display my extensive Radiohead vinyl collection.

And first in their discography–at least in my opinion–is 2007's In Rainbows.

I think In Rainbows is an absolute masterpiece. It's sonic soundscape is full and textured; the layered rhythms, the beautiful harmonies, the syncopation, and the lyrics dripping with both meaning and satire.

Enter Super Mario 64, the 1996 masterpiece in its own right with a dedicated following all these years later. It's soundtrack; iconic. The tamber and quality of the instruments alone evoke a very specific, very nostalgic feel.

And then someone decided to combine the two:

Re-imagining Radiohead's In Rainbows using Super Mario 64's samples, the YouTube channel on4word has created something special: "In Rainbow Roads."

Clearly a fan of In Rainbows, on4word has produced one of the most convincing arguments against the notion that "all Radiohead fans are pretentious, self-serious, angsty weirdos." (Again, I'm a huge fan of Radiohead.)

And it seems like they (or at least lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood) has heard this!

While there are a few sour moments in In Rainbow Roads, I have to admit that I absolutely love this SM64 de-make of my favorite album of all time.

And while I appreciate what was done here, I do have to pose the question: what if A Moon Shaped Pool was re-made using the sound samples from Pilotwings 64?

Someone, quick. Get on it!

In the meantime, this album is available on Bandcamp.
