Proton 8.0 is Finally Here! Peirre-Loup Griffais: "Our biggest rebase to date!"
Proton 8.0 brings many of the changes from Proton Experimental to the mainstream.
After covering what feels like countless Experimental updates, the main user base of the Steam Deck utilizing the Stable branch of Proton will get to experience Valve’s version of the Wine 8.0 translation layer. Eighteen more titles become playable including the Dead Space remake along with fixing a slew of bugs like raytracing in Crysis Remastered and improving multi-touch support. As Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais described in a tweet this was the biggest rebase so far and Experimental-8.0 will come shortly after the stable 8.0 release.
It’s always great to be reminded of Valve’s constant improvements to the Deck and Linux gaming as a whole with what feels like weekly changelogs. As an important note, Proton 8.0 requires a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.3 so that would require an Nvidia GTX 700 series or newer and an AMD Radeon RX 400 series. You can find the full changelog down below.
